It's too similar a role to the much more superior Uncle Buck.
Dutch is Buck.
The Boy is the spoilt 15 year old.

And with the "road trip with a buffoon" element plot added, it would be like John Candy is doing another rendition of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Yeah, if they had used Candy, it would have come off as way too familiar.

Never thought of it that way. Dutch is very Uncle Buck. John Candy in general is very witty in his movies, tho I dunno....Dutch (Ed O'Neil) may have been slightly wittier than even Candy in "Dutch"!

I think he's too unattractive to headline a movie.
