Are there any other films where a woman retreats into a sort of fantasy world to deal with the emotional and/or physical abuse, similar to this one?

The dynamic between the mother and daughter in this film reminds me a bit of Selina Kyle and her briefly heard (via answer-machine) mother in 'Batman Returns', where in that instance it appears that Selina has been ground down by both her mother and the men in her life causing her to retreat into mousiness (and it's implied, as with this 'Drop Dead Fred' that Selina's father is no longer around, which is possibly why Selina's mother gives her such a hard time, as Polly does to Elizabeth here).

However, as with Elizabeth and her friend Fred in this movie, Selina turns to a type of fantasy world, in this case by dressing up as a 'Catwoman', to assert her confidence as a coping mechanism for dealing with the bullying/abuse she experiences.
