I don't understand why people don't like this movie

My daughter and I enjoyed this movie so much, we rewound it and watched it again. (This has only happened 2 other times; Lady in White and Beetlejuice). In fact, my quote at the bottom is from my favorite scene. Elizabeth and Fred go to a wine-tasting party where they know Charles will be. Fred takes the grapes off of a waiter's toga, which then falls on the floor. He tried to make it look like Elizabeth did it. Hence the quote. To the people who didn't like it, I would give this another try. It's not an award-winner by any stretch of the imagination. It's just a funny little movie.

She did it! She did it! The lady with the grape!

This is one of my favorite childhood movies right along with Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Grease. My favorite part is when he looks under the ladies dress I think it is Elizabeth's mom and says "eww cobwebs" I still laugh

I think the cobwebs line is the best line in the whole movie. It makes me laugh every time.

i think people the movie put people off as it was done in pretty bad taste,although it was marketed for kids it's quite adult in tone, also the humour in it was quite brash/southparky in places and not everybody likes that style.

You're right, and that's exactly why I liked it as a kid. Childhood isn't all sunshine and puppies; it can be very scary and unpleasant at times. I just love the imagery of the old, neglected, taped up jack in the box at the beginning. Perfect metaphor for what happens to our childhood selves. We're so confident and brassy as kids, and yet somehow we lose that as adults, in working so hard to please other people.

I loved it as a kid as well. It was a way to live through Fred and do all the stuff kids want to do but can't (stay up late, make a mess, go in the room you're not supposed to, crack jokes about the parents, say bad words, etc)

It's funny how times change. This wasn't seen as that 'dirty' of a kids movie until recently. Most of my friends watched it when they were young as well and nobody seemed to have a problem with it. What happened to the semi dark kids movies like this or Clifford? Now the darkest they get is animated movies like coraline or paranorman (for the most part)
