Why do you think he saw himself as a child at the birthday party?

I found that birthday party scene wistful but strangely soothing. He seemed to be coming to terms with the end of his music career and how he was dying of alcoholism. Perhaps seeing himself as a child symbolised he was leaving this world.

I think it represented death but he could be his true self again. Fame and drugs changed him.

That's fair enough. Obviously he was looking forward to a quieter life in France.
