Question to those of you who have listened to the commentary on the DVD

Yeah, I was just wondering if there are any interesting tidbits on the Commentary.

reply

Yes, there are interesting tidbits throughout the entire commentary.

Director Nancy Savoca offers previously unknown details about how River Phoenix and Lili Taylor first met, how they chose to portray their characters, River's pre-filming preparations, River's thoughts about the filming of Dogfight, River's thoughts about his character Birdlace, and River and Lili's improvisational contributions.

River and Lili improvised several of their key scenes together. As certain scenes unfold, Nancy discusses how the scenes were meant to be cut down, but because of the ingenuity of River and Lili's improvisations, the scenes were left untouched. Nancy credits them with expertly taking certain scenes beyond what she expected.

Nancy and Bob Comfort (who wrote the screenplay) also offer background stories about the the film itself. For example, they explain the origins of the plotline, the recreation of the all 1960's shops, their musical choices, etc.

The best parts of the commentary are when she fully discusses certain thematic moments - the restaurant scene, Birdlace throwing Rose's phone number out of the window, the kiss, and the lovemaking sequence.

I wish that River was some lucky girl's husband, too. Rest in peace, River.

Thanks for that, I feel a bit silly now but I'm over in Australia and we can't get Dogfight on dvd (that I've managed to track down anyway, and half the videoshops in my area don't even stock it on vhs anymore either!!) So I've found a dvd copy on ebay in America that I've ordered and it did note it has directors commentary. So yay, I'll get to hear it.

Thanks again!

Hi does anyone know where I can find any of River's films on VHS or DVD? I live in London and I can't find them in any shops and I really don't want to buy them on the internet, the only films I have are Stand by me on DVD, The thing called love and Sneakers which were taped from TV. I really want to see all of River's films, he was such an amazing actor.

This is no surprise. The chemistry is too strong to be a happy accident. Also there were tell-tales signs of improvisation such as stammers and over-talking.

You know me. I'm just like you. It's two in the morning and I don't know nobody.
