I took it as he thought she looked bad because her hair was quite poofy and her makeup was a little all over the place.

Actually, now that I'm watching it a second time, I'm a little indifferent. Who knows what he's thinking when he says that???

Oh, I totally think he thought she looked awful with that dress and make-up! His expression is just so funny and even more hilarious when, one moment after, he tells her the opposite of what he thinks: "You look great!" LOL :p
shareWhen I first watched it, I couldn't tell either!
She looked a little bit better than when she was in the coffee house.
When she was in the corner with her guitar, her eyes looked like she'd been crying.
She looked better with makeup on.
So really, I haven't a clue if he ment it as a good thing or a bad thing.
But i love the part where he smears lipstick all over her face. LOL!
He thought she looked good, or at least better. Directly afterwards he starts acting nervous and tries to talk her out of going to the party. Then tries to mess up her lipstick outside to make her look worse. Once they're at the party he's clearly embaressed that she's not ugly enough and they only give him honorable mention because she throws up.
shareNo, she looks a total fright at this point! Thats whats so funny, coz she's spent all that time trying on different outfits and trying to make herself look good and in the end, she totally crashes and burns. He says "jesus god" under his breath coz he's so appalled. But then he immediately *beep* her with, " you look great". At this point in the film, he is still very insincere and quite mean (though not outwardly). It's only as he gets to know, and like her, that he becomes more sincere and genuine with her.
