How We Relate to Romance

I don't watch love stories for the romance. I'm a guy, and, perhaps stereotypically, I'm not that interested in romance as a genre. I love The Philadelphia Story, but mostly for the witty script and great performances.

Dogfight is different. I like Dogfight in a purely romantic way. Lili Taylor's performance is remarkable, and River does a fine job, too, but my appreciation of the movie isn't the product of critical evaluation. I watch it for a reflection of what I would like to believe. And I'm more than a little in love with Rose herself. I love her faith, her wit, her naivete and her courage. I idealize her, and she makes me yearn to be in love. Not to be in love with her, necessarily, but to be young and alive and in love with the whole world the way she is.

Rose is my hero.

That's a lovely comment....I forget now...but I think I must have first seen this film back in 1992, I've watched it so much since then, that I have lost the initial wonder of when I first saw it and your comment reminds me of what I too felt about Rose.
