<< i suspect rose is not more 'hippy like' in appearance because she grew up and changed. i think its refreshing that she's not how you would expect, she bought in, she took over her mothers cafe instead of trying to save the world like her younger mind planned. i always wondered if that was to do with her keeping eddie in mind, knowing he was out there. and the hippie generations changing thoughts on marines (as seen in the 'how many babies did you kill?' comment he recieves) were not her thoughts, because she knew first hand that the armed forces (certainly the first few waves) didnt know what was gonna happen when they got there.>>
Remember the line when Rose says she doesn't want to end up taking over the café from her mother.... I believe that since Eddie hadn't written to her in those years, she eventually gave up on life. Her style of dress seemed to resemble that of her mother from earlier -- understated, introverted. She never thought to see him again and was resigned to her fate, till he returned. And even then, she showed little emotion. She had to come out of her shell all over again.
