Rose wasn't actually a fan of Peter, Paul and Mary and said that real folk singers "write their own stuff." I don't think Birdlace really knows who they are, just that he's heard of them. They aren't really his thing. That scene did show that he wasn't really aware of that world and did make silly, goofy jokes about it all.
