I'm just curious to know whether lili and river were friends during this film, and if they knew each other before the film, and if they kept intouch afterwards ? And also if they had feelings for each other ?.I think they would have made a cute couple actually,i thought they looked well matched in the film.Whoever did the casting for the film made a very good choice.
I read it US Premiere magazine that he teased her and made oik noises, (as in pig noises) offscreen, but people were saying he was just being the character or something. But I've also read that he asked her to see his band play after they'd finished making the film and he also said Lili was one of the best actors he'd ever worked with, (he was right there), but I'd go with the first scenario myself. They certainly never went out or even socialised as far as I know as his mum and girlfriend were there too.
I personally don't think River was as lovely as people make out, he could be a bastard and was a shallow as everyone else, the above shows.
If he'd made insulting noises like that to me, he would have been dead long before he did actually die, not very accepting there was he?
But Lili Taylor didn't need that, she's a brilliant actress, Samantha Mathis on the other hand isn't in the same league so it would have helped her performance but if that's how River dealt with it, that's that but I still would have clocked him one.
sorry, i'm having trouble believing that.. i've read that lili was small when she got the part in 'dogfight', and they tried to get her to gain some weight for the role, but she was still too small, so they ended up padding her (as you can even tell in the movie - thin arms & neck / abnormally thick around the waist - ppl usually gain weight more evenly over their entire body than that).. it just doesn't make sense that he'd make fun of her weight when it was well known she was wearing padding, unless maybe he thought it was ok specifically because she was small.. i'm not saying the story wasn't reported that way, but it just doesn't ring true and/or make much sense, so i'm guessing large pieces of the full story were left out to make it sound like 'juicier' gossip..
That's always puzzled me. It's like the film is some sort of embarrassment for them?
They worked so well together but apparently didn't like each other, (I noticed River whispering to Lili that he liked her in the bed scence though), which was weird.
Even the quote about Lili being on of the best actors he's worked with was something I got second hand, so that may be untrue too.
Lili's always being ignored though so she may never have been asked about him?? And I know River was dissappionted with the film so that could be the reason he wouldn't talk about it either, I guess we'll never know.
Kinda of sad, for such a lovely film and my second favourite of his.
I remember seeing Lili Taylor on The Rosie O'Donnell Show and Rosie brought this movie up, and Lili said nothing. Absolutely nothing. She just sat there and let Rosie talk about it. Pretty maddening.
I felt the connection while watching this movie! But, it could be because they are such wonderful actors.
I watched this movie the other day for the first time! Im a new River fan! Isn't that weird? But, Im a teenager and I watched 'Little little Nikita" and fell in love.I was very sad when I found out that this grogoeous, talented actor was dead.
I've also watched 'Stand by me' when I was younger but I didn't think much then of his foul-mouthed character! lol.
It was in a UK magazine called TV Hits when River was still alive and it went something like:-
"You were very sexy in Dogfight"
"Oh that. That was a film that was ruined by an editor. You know, it could have been a great film but it just ended up as "uh"? "
That's the quote I semi remember. I was sooo disappointed to read that, because this film touches me very deeply even though it is flawed. But this was when he was into his drugs so his mood throughout the interview was very negative.
I'm curious to know what 'bit part' Sue had also...maybe one of the hippies on the street when Eddie returns to see Rose after the war?.....This is the first time I've heard that she (Sue) was with him during the filming of this movie. I remember reading in numerous other sites that Sue had been quoted saying that she had stayed behind in Florida at their shared rented apartment while River was away filming. She had said the time and distance apart was good and bad. Good because it made them appreciate each other and bad because of how much she missed him....not the exact quote but in different words. She also posted a clip on Youtube for (I think) the 15th anniversary of River's death. In the clip she read a post card he had sent her while he was away filming Dogfight.
I wouldn't doubt that she would've went to visit him though..and hence ended up with a bit part.I'm just curious because I've never heard about it until this post. I did also hear he had Joaquin with him for alot of the filming too. As per a quote from the director of Dogfight....
Well on this occasion Sue his older masseuse girlfriend was with him at some point during the filming.
Her bit part is indeed that of a hippie. Towards the end of the movie she's the girl that Eddie eyes up when he's walking past Rose's cafe after he returns from 'Nam.
When Eddie comes back at the end, as he's walking down the street towards Rose's cafe, he almost bumps into a woman coming the other way, with mousey long blonde/brown hair and multi-coloured shortish dress, you don't see her face but that's Sue. She is so pretty though, how jealous am I hehe.
She's on U-tube BTW. In one video, she reads a letter River sent her when he was away filming, she's lovely.
