I just watched it, and the impression I got was that it was a condom. I very well could be wrong though.

If I remember correctly it was the money he won in the Dogfight for runner up, he didn't want to use it or keep it.
shareMmmm - I've seen this quite a few times..and I'd have to go with it being a condom...obviously. He hardly had any money to even buy dinner - remember? He didn't eat because after Rose 'swore' her way through her order (great part!!)...she asked him why he didn't order anything himself...he replied that he didn't have enough $$$. Then later he used his change to play the instrumentals in the music room...
Plus! He also had to buy the jacket to get into the restaurant before all of that...

I thought condom. Also, keep in mind this was shot in the early 90s and HIV was still a big risk. You'll notice in a lot of early 90s films they talk a lot about the fear of AIDS. Although this was set in the 60s, I think they thought it important to include.
