The Trams

I watched the film today and I noticed that while the realm he visits seems like a paradise the trams have a device that's there to hurt you if you try to leave, it seems strange to have one thing to hurt you when everything else is designed to make you as comfortable as possible.

Your trial is the main feature of Judgement City. It, and your prosecutor, are not there to make you comfortable.

I forgot the induction, thanks for reminding me.

Only if you try to board a tram you're not supposed to be on.

You just have to be resigned-
You're crashing by design

I remember listening to Albert Brooks on a radio show right before this movie came out and part of the tram thing was a joke about tram rides at amusement parks, tours, etc. They usually travel at a very slow speed, and yet the guides would typically warn passengers in very ominous tones to stay put at all costs.

In "Defending Your Life," the guide gives a similar warning, but adds that there is an extremely dangerous force field surrounding the trams! Later in the film, this serves a practical purpose as an obstacle between Brooks and Streep.
