can someone explain the rooms for me

ok well, each mistress has a big room and the maids for them have a small room. but how do the lantern organisations actually work??

i mean are the lanterns in that chosen mistress's room lit up, or do they go into the big rrom at the back? if not what is the room at the back for? because i can remember that sister 4 comes outa there when sister 3 gets caught in the night because of the cheating, and sister 5 is in there getting her feet massaged... basically my question is what is the back rrom for?

"If happy little Bluebirds fly,
beyond the rainbow. Why, oh why, can't I?"

what do you mean by back room?

Each woman has her own quarters and when the Master chooses to visit one, the servants light the red lanterns in the chosen wife/concubine's quarters to signify that she is the favourite that specific night. In China Wife No. 1 is the only real wife - all other women are concubines. The first woman he marries is the highest among all the other women. The amount of concubines a man has signifies his wealth and position - of course there are exceptions.

Perhaps the reason for another concubine being in the same room (after the lanterns are lit) is that she is helping the chosen woman prepare for the master's visit - or in a bid to sabotage the master's visit to this particular concubine. There was a lot of jealousy involved.
