Locations / Latern covers

I'd be interested to know where this was filmed. Was it a set? On location? It could be a real house somewhere and, if so, is no doubt a tourist site now.

Were the snow scenes filmed in Winter on location? Is there mention of a city the movie is set in? It seems to be in a huge walled compound with quarters for each "wife" and servants. I wonder what those lanterns were made of since they seem to survive the rain.

And then there are the covers. They must have some cultural/historical significance since you could just blow out the flame or take them down. What's behind the covers?

Anyone have a link to a Chinese historian with commentary?

The lanterns were probably made of oiled paper, which would have made them water-proof, like paper umbrellas.

It's filmed near a town called Pingyao - I went to where it was filmed and it is stunning.
