I don't get this line...

The man ate bacon at every meal... you just can't do that!

It was culture shock: The City Slickers were modern guys who live by what the Surgeon General says, but Curly was a throwback to another era when people thought for themselves (for better or worse...).

Curly would have said his time had just come, but Phil saw it from the present day perspective that a little more fiber in his diet and some time at the gym would have avoided the whole thing.

It is kind of interesting the way Curly's breathing sounded, though. This man may really have been the toughest man Mitch had ever seen, but he was pretty much worn out health-wise.

I think srnumber's answer was too involved. Simple explanation: bacon, altho enormously delicious, is terrible for your heart. Curly should have been a healthier eater.

What Phil said was true, but it's his astonishment at it that makes it funny.

Curly could have lead a life obsessing about his good cholesterol and his bad cholesterol, but as he would say "You city folk worry about a whole lotta crap, don't ya?" Sure, he died, but he really lived while he had the chance.

Phil on the other hand only wished he was dead.

Who knows, maybe it is better to eat bacon every day and die quietly out on a cattle drive than to spend your whole life being Phil!
