What do people think of the 'one thing' idea?

What do people think of the “one thing” philosophy? Do you think you can live your life, just focus on the one thing that’s most important to you, and that will make everything else easier to bear? Maybe I’m too pessimistic, but this concept just seems like a contrived plot element the screenwriters came up with as a way for Mitch and his friends to feel better about their life, and give the movie the obligatory happy ending. What do other people think? Is the “one thing” philosophy valid, or is it just a feel good plot point that cannot work in the real world?

I like the idea, but it's a little simplistic. Maybe it's better to say "one big thing" and let that shape the rest of the little things in your life. Everything can't be important at the same time.

For me the big thing is my family, and I see my career as a means to supporting it.

Maybe I don't work as hard or as long at it as other people and maybe I don't make as much money or have as much prestige either.

-but as Curly would say, maybe that doesn't mean "shee-itt".

Life is too complex these days. Everything is 24 hours a day and seven days a week. If you don't find a way to simplify, it will grind you into the dirt.

I have known people whose life centers around one thing. I once joined a chess club, and I could go there any work night and any time during the weekend, and there were half a dozen people who were always there playing chess. That was forty years ago, but I’ll bet they are playing chess right now. When I took up dancing, I found that there were people who went dancing five nights a week, often concentrating on just one dance. And they were just the amateurs. The professional dancers put in so many hours per week dancing that I don’t see how they could enjoy it any more. I know it would have ruined it for me.

I think most people prefer doing a variety of things, having different interests and amusements. And I really don’t see how your family could be that one thing. But then, maybe that is why I am a bachelor.
