DVD?
ANYONE OUT THERE THINK THIS AND "WITCH HUNT" SHOULD BE ON DVD?

FRIENDS!!"

Not only should Cast a Deadly spell be out on DVD if there was ever a movie that needs a sequel this is it. Fred Ward rocked in this movie. I'd love to see them bring back Private Dick HP.
sharegorgon1964,
Witch Hunt is the sequel to Cast a Deadly Spell. Dennis Hopper stars as H.P.
Lovecraft, but it's equally weird and entertaining.
"WE ALL FLOAT DOWN HERE. BRING YOUR
FRIENDS!!"
I'll agree with the equality in weirdness, but not entertainment. I could do without the allegory to 50's poltics.
Still if the only way to get "Spell" on DVD is to pair it with the sequel, I'm all for it! :-)
"It's a trap!"
- Admiral Ackbar
There was a sequel, Witch Hunt. It's available on VHS. Also diverting and enjoyable.
shareI would love to see them, too. Great flicks.
shareSame here. Quite a few of the better HBO movies are available, Citizen X, Conspiracy, Rat Pack, etc, but this is my personal favorite.
Best line, "It's not a squid."
It crops up on ThrillerMax occasionally; record on the DVR.
shareCast A Deadly Spell was released on DVD in 2001 but it would be easier to find Jimmy Hofffa than to find a copy on DVD. I've even checked the HBO website. They don't even have it listed.
"wherever you go, there you are"
I dont know about a USA release or Jimmy Hoffa for that matter, but if you count a british region 2 version then i found it..
shareI definitely want this movie on DVD.
What about that time I found you naked with that bowl of jello?share
I have this on DVD in Letterbox format with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, why don't you it is easy enough to find?
shareYeah? Would you care to give the EAN/UPC number?
I haven't fround any legit release.
I haven't even found an illegitimate release.
And I'm kinda suspicious about 5.1 sound - Cast a Deadly Spell was a 1991 "made for TV. One of the first DD 5.1 movies was Batman Returns from 1992 and the best one could hope for TV production back then was Dolby Surround Prologic.
You did? All I found was a DVD R RIP of the British tape, but not a genuine British Code Release.
Actually, I looked for it at the time, and I never found it anywhere.
According to what I was told by someone who worked at Suncoast, it was listed as a DVD release in the computer system, but when the time actually came to order copies from the studio, it didn't come up. In other words, it's vaporware - while it was listed for release, it was never actually released.
As far as I know, after years of looking for it on and off, there was no legitimate Region 1 release of any kind.
Absolutely! We ended up buying a DVD recorder; this movie was one of the reasons. We didn't want our tape to deteriorate.
This movie has it all: great songs, great satire, great creatures, one virgin, one witch, two villians, gay lovers, straight lovers, a hot nightclub, hardboiled cops and a Thing from the Abyss. And something that isn't a squid. Loved it!
There is a website out there called Cult DVD Zone that sells a DVD-R copy of the movie. I haven't checked to see if they have the other one mentioned above.
shareGreat movie that should be on DVD, with special features.
techneonate- I took a look at Cult DVD zone, I think they are out of business.
Easy to find in many hubs.

Don't worry. I bough the LD a couple of months ago and will even pay to get it copied to DVD - so there ought to be a official release within 6 months.
At least that's the pattern whenever I went through some lenghts to get a movie that's not available locally.
Last two success stories: "Gwendoline" and a German Code 2 DVD of "The Court Jester". :-)

Yes very much so I have been wanting these on DVD for a couple of years now. I love campy movies like these that touch on the greatness that is H.P Lovercraft.
Can't be done soon enough IMHO. In fact I'm kind of pissed they are not on DVD yet as it is.
After seeing "Witch Hunt", which I rather liked, I found out about the prequel: you can find it on BT Junkie as an .AVI...as I'm still getting it, I have no idea what the quality would be, though...
shareWhat I really love about this is that while it does have that fun, camp factor (that rubbery gargoyle...), it's also an honestly well-written homage to both film noir and H.P. Lovecraft. The way the story encompasses Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos is really cool, and the dialogue is dead-on film noir- they really got it right! And the casting of Fred Ward (a very underrated character actor) as the Marlowe-esque private eye and Julianne Moore as the femme fatale are perfect choices.
This is a rare sort of movie that I rented expecting fun camp or cheese, only to find that it actually is a very good movie (with some camp and cheese thrown in for fun, of course)! Yeah, it really needs to come out on DVD. Where is Anchor Bay when you need them?
Also, speaking of campy movies that touch on the greatness of Lovecraft, I highly recommend that you check out The Resurrected (the Case of Charles Dexter Ward movie) if you haven't yet.

This was being sold on VHS during the national warehouse liquidators' liquidation sale, up until January of this year. One of my friends got a copy.
Maybe there are still copies floating out there... IIRC, nwl also sold a dubbed Spanish version of the movie.
