1960's and tattoo removal

I found it interesting that Bean's lawyer negotiated a deal which included a clause that: "The tattoos have to come off within 30 days of your release from the stockade."

Now in 2007, tattoo removal is easy if you have the time (and money!), but how were they going to remove private Bean's tattoos in the 1960's?

The only thing I can think of is Dermabrasion, where they scrape off layer after layer of skin, eventually leaving a nasty scar.

I noticed that too.

My father was stationed in Germany in the late 50s early 60s. He had a tatoo on his right forearm and was told he would not be allowed to return to the states unless he had it removed. He never told me how it was done but I never noticed a mark on his arms.
