this movie is a prequel to Platoon? Just wondering because it seems to lean that way. Even though I know Charlie Sheen's characters had two different names (Bean in Cadence and Taylor in Platoon), it would still have made a good prequel.
lol, i like to think of it as a prequel to "Platoon", too...
Fishburne tells Charlie to seek out "the brothers" when he gets to the 'Nam, that they'll watch his back... and that's exactly what happens to Charlie in "Platoon".
Remember that scene when they're all getting high and singing Motown songs together? One of my favorite scenes.
I agree with you about 'Platoon.' Just wanted to add a correction. It wasn't Fishburn who told him to 'get with the brothers' in 'Nam. It was Michael Beach, right after he tossed back the lighter he had stolen from Sheen's character earlier in the movie. (I just watched it on Comcast OnDemand yesterday.)

No Way The soldier that Bean became was much more mature than Pvt. Chris Taylor. Bean is a bad ass without options without a family or future.
While Chris Taylor (From Wikipedia) - "is a 19-20 year old rookie Private, whose thoughts are sometimes provided in voice-over narration. His family is described as being a traditional upper-middle class American family. His grandfather and father fought in World War I and World War II , respectively. Chris had a stable, suburban life but after some time in college, felt it unfair to be exempt from service due to his school attendance, while the poor who can't afford higher education are sent off to fight. Feeling he's not learning anything substantive, he drops out and volunteers for the infantry and deployment to Vietnam."
Just finished watching this great movie again. It wasn't Lawrence Fishburne's character who told Bean to look to the brother's when he got to 'Nam, it was Webb, just after he threw Bean's lighter back to him as he was getting ready to leave.
In American History X, When Edward Norton's character was leaving prison, the block dude who was his friend and kept him from getting killed also said "take care of the brothers...the brothas!!" so maybe that movie was the sequel to Platoon?
Old ass thread I know. But I was just thinking this tonight when I watched it. It would have taken nothing to actually make this a prequel to Platoon. Just change a name. Of course it isn't but it makes for a good one night combo and just pretend.
