I think it's a misconception that they're clueless, they are in fact quite intellectual, they just choose to be "clueless" cause rockin out is cooler than learning.
If you listen to the dialogue they do use some fairly advanced vocabulary at times, such as "our girlfriends are so chaste!" So they're not completely stupid.
Basically they're the type of kids that if they applied themselves they'd do well at school but they can't be bothered so they just get by on what they know and pick up a little on the way.
