Every time Tim or Jill went outside to talk to Wilson I always notice the fake lawn and it makes me shake my head :(
shareYeah, it always looked a bit fake. I think in a few episodes it even had wrinkles in it.
And another thing...why did Tim always wear a dress shirt and tie on Tool Time?
shareOh, that was part of his persona, as was Al's plaid shirt and jeans.
Remember, Tim was a former Binford salesman so the collar and tie juxtaposed against the tool belt made sense. He was corporate and had the gift of the gab that all good salesmen have. That's why John Binford let him do the show. On the other hand, Al was the former construction worker--a proud union man, no less--so his clothes fit.
Also, Tim was a genuine klutz. Not that he didn't have actual skills but he was always a heartbeat away from an accident. That also fit with the visual contradiction of dress shirt and tool belt. Al knew his stuff and it showed in his clothes.
Actually, Tim was like most home handymen; a weekend warrior, with all the faults.
Yeah, but it kind of went against his manly man persona. Manly blue collar men hate wearing dress shirts and ties. He had to dress like that as a salesman, but as a host of a home improvement show, you'd think he'd want to shed that attire ASAP.
shareAh, but your see, he did dress like that in the early days of the show.
There was a flashback episode where we saw Tim and Al when the show was first aired. Tim had a beard and plaid shirt and Al was clean-shaven. An old woman (Mrs Binford, perhaps?) was the Tool Girl.
The point of that episode, I think, was that the original format didn't work and that's how they ended up with the current show.
