Doug's Doodle
Perhaps the finest cartoon episode ever created. Hats off to Keith Van Allen (storyboard artist), Ken Scarborough (writer), and Carol Millican (director) for putting this together (not to mention Fred Newman for the unforgettable music).
It's kind of like what The Chinese Restaurant was to Seinfeld. It takes place entirely in one setting, with the sharp, clever writing being on full display. And the surreal sequence where the room starts spinning around Doug as he realizes the mistake he made and is filled with fear and regret...wow. I've experienced that same sort of feeling before, and this shot captured it perfectly.
As an aside, did anyone notice the custodian was wearing brass knuckles in Doug's imaginary scene with Mr. Bone interrogating Boomer? Little things like that make me glad I ordered the DVD set off amazon.
But this episode is absolutely magnificent and timeless. To me, it's the finest episode in a long line of terrific episodes from a terrific series.
