References/homages in Doug

On that Doug blog site, one person in the comments section under one episode mentions a reference to a somewhat obscure movie in the episode (or at least one I haven't seen), and it got me to thinking about other references to film/TV/entertainment.

One that immediately comes to mind is in "Doug Graduates"...the scene where Doug's climbing above the ceiling tiles seems to be an homage to the scene where John Bender does it in "The Breakfast Club."

Obviously, there are many more. Some fairly obvious, some less so. Feel free to mention them in this thread.

From the Nickelodeon version:

In the original 1990 pilot "Doug Can't Dance", the foot hop song seems to be a soundalike rendition of "Can't Touch This".

In "Doug Gets Busted", Wannana Jack Bandit, seems to be a nod to Zorro.

Spacemunks is a nod to Star Wars and Wing Commander.

Honker Burger is a parody of In-And-Out Burger.

Swirly's is a parody of Friendly's Ice Cream.

In the Disney version:

August 22 is Doug's birthday, and is 11 days after the original shows' premiere.

Arthur and Buster from Marc Brown's Arthur are mentioned in the first episode of this version.

Plastic Judy Band: Parody of Plastic Ono Band from "Doug's Concert Crisis".

In "Doug's Great Opportoonity", one of Doug's fantasies is a parody of a scene from Braveheart.

In "Doug: Night of the Living Dougs", Doug sees posters for "Wag the Doug" and "Reservior Dougs": (the latter is a nod to "Reservior Dogs").

In "Quailman: The Unquail Saga", bobbinite is a nod to kryptonite.

Smash Adams is a James Bond parody, but in the theme music, there's also some "Get Smart" in there.

reply

Oh, forgot to mention - the character's name, "Smash Adams," was obviously a reference to the actor Don Adams, who played Maxwell Smart on "Get Smart."

Re: Doug Blog Site, are you referring to "Doug Funnie is Crazy"? That's such an awesome site! I never realized Doug was so mental and paranoid!

A video store is named Lackluster Video. Obviously a reference to Blockbuster Video. There's a restaurant in the Four Leaf Clover Mall called T.J. Roughage, and it appears to serve up a lot of salad. I think that name was inspired by T.J. Cinnamons.

Race Canyon is based on Indian Jones.

Of course The Beets were inspired by The Beatles.

Skeeter and Doug created a comic book featuring Quail Man, and Silver Skeet, based on Silver Surfer.

In the episode of "Doug and Patti Sitting In The Tree," Doug watches these movies. Catman Returns is obviously Batman Returns, and that movie with the couple skating through an art museum is a definite reference to L.A. Story.

In "Doug's Monster Movie," there is a very funny reference to the show Siskel and Ebert. Doug, his mom, and Skeeter are sitting in a theater watching Doug's homemade monster movie, which his mom is using to expose the town's trash problem. Two guys are sitting on either side of the front row of the theater critiquing the movie like reviewers, parodying Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, doing their signature thumbs down routine:

" ...what does it all mean? It doesn't add up ..."
"And what is this business with the shark dog?"

reply

And they weren't voiced by Siskel and Ebert themselves at all. They sounded more like they were voiced by Doug Preis talking to himself.

reply

The Roger Ebert parody was Doug Preis, but Siskel was Billy West. They gave them New York accents which is weird since they were from Chicago.

In the episode "The Lost Weekend", Doug spends all his time playing his brand new Super Pretendo. Reference to the Super Nintendo, of course. Also, there was an academy award winning movie titled The Lost Weekend.

In the episode 'Doug's Nightmare on Jumbo St.' when him and Porkchop are at the movie, Doug uses things to prop open his eyes while Porkchop dabs water in em, a reference, I think, to A Clockwork Orange. And the name of the episode itself is a takeoff of A Nightmare on Elm Street, obviously. ha

In the episode "Doug's Garage Band" with the famous "Think Big!" music video sequence scene, the music video features a reference to Michael Jackson's "Black or White" music video and David Byrne's big suit in the movie "Stop Making Sense".
