I think he got paralyzed in an accident of some kind though it's never mentioned in the show. I always assumed that since it's mentioned that Patti's mother is dead maybe her parents were in a car accident and only her father survived but is now paralyzed.

That's what the implication is. When Doug shows up at the door of their apartment and sees him in the wheelchair, the implication is that he puts two and two together.

lol at this thread. Maybe his legs were crushed when Doug threw the rock that knocked Patti's house over in that one episode?
