Most admirable thing that Doug did.

Normally I find Doug to be pretty bland but he's always been a good kid and I was just watching the episode where he helps Roger against Percy and I got to say it's probably the most noble thing he's done because on top of standing up for someone who regularly torments him he also faced Percy knowing he was going to get his ass kicked.

What's that supposed to mean? You want him to be some crazy weirdo? Doug's the protagonist; the character most people can relate to. And he's fleshed out beyond any cartoon character I've ever seen. His journal entries and imagination sequences leave no stone unturned. I could write a 10 page report on his personality. He is the show.

This isn't like Hey Arnold where it's like, "ok, which of the 30 crazy weirdos is this episode about? Oh, what's this crazy weirdo going to do now?"

Nope, just not so bland. Even Skeeter was hip. I like Doug, he's a great kid, very responsible, trustworthy, loyal, and always does the right thing in the end of tough situations. Just because I point out one character trait that I don't like doesn't mean I think he's a bad character. He's just kind of dull in conversations.

Skeeter's a weirdo. If Doug was like Skeeter he'd be pretty much one-dimensional, which is not what you want in a protagonist. By the end of the series, Doug is a real person, full of all the human strengths and faults on full display. And Skeeter is still the goofy best friend.

He was weird but not in a bad way. Neither of them are my favorite character. Roger, now he's my favorite character, he's both a protagonist and an antagonist. Definitely not a bad kid.

I like Skeeter as a supporting character, which is what he is. But the central character should usually be someone the audience can relate to. I'm sure on some level, some kids could relate to Skeeter's laid back, goofy, playful character, but we don't get to see him with the internal struggle Doug has. Both the anxiety and self-consciousness and the courage and integrity. The jealousy and paranoia and occasional selfishness and the apology when he realizes he was guilty of those kinds of behaviors/attitudes.

Roger's great too, because we all knew a kid like that in school. It would be an interesting challenge to make a show about him. Hey Arnold was able to do it at times with Helga, but they used her crush on Arnold and her being a girl to sort of soften it. Roger's antics seem more of a combination of immaturity and a genuine belief that people just need to grow thicker skin. He doesn't mean to be malicious; he's just being a guy, which he sees as playfully being a dick to people a lot of the time.

A lot of kids can relate to Roger too growing up without a father and all so I think some of his pranks are just Roger acting out but he has shown quite a few times on the show that he has a soft side. I think all the characters are relatable in some way There is Beebe the rich girl, chalky the jock etc. But I do agree that Doug is the character we can all relate to the most as we have seen him in the toughest of situations, plus we've all felt like Doug at that age such as having a crush on the cute girl, wanting to fit in, feeling insecure, and then having that one guy in our life that makes us feel insecure (roger). Also all the fantasies in our head wishing we could be like someone who seems more superior
