What was with the obsession with beets?

Before you guys say "They're nature's candy," let me just point out a lot of things that are beet-related. A band called The Beets, a sport called "Beetball," and for a ballet dance, a title called the "Sugar-Beet Fairy." I could go on. Was that Jim Jinkins' favorite vegetable or something?

All I need is one mic...

Beets represented tobacco, which was Virginia's big crop. Jinkins replaced it with beets because they're healthier.

They're nature's candy, don't you know?

Everyone knows that.
