I think the time is right for a return...
With all of the television work Disney has out now from "Phineas and Ferb" to "Gravity Falls" to all of its Marvel shows, I think that it's TV animation division is going strong. I think Disney should consider doing a direct-to-TV movie of "Darkwing Duck" to test the waters to see if their older titles still have appeal. Personally, I think they do.
I think "The Duck Knight Returns" comic book storyline put out a few years ago by Boom Studios would be a great story to adapt...DW has been gone for a year and a corporation takes over St. Canard with an army of robots that have kept the criminal element in check. However, the company has secrets and something happens that forces DW to return as "the terror that flaps in the night."
That said, there are probably rights issues involved and all kinds of stuff that would make if difficult to accomplish with that storyline.
However, I think a new Darkwing Duck feature has potential if a good story can be found.
The revived comic series was popular with a lot of people. It was only cancelled when Disney and Marvel merged.
I think there is an audience for this. If it is popular, more can be made and Disney can branch out with its other Disney Afternoon shows.
The ending of "The Duck Knight Returns" would make a good segway to another popular Disney show that would be ripe for revival.
Can you imagine the marketing? A brief scene shown on Disney Channel where we see a rainswept street and a shadow darting through the scene and then it resolves into the classic DW appearance. The words appear on on screen... "Let's get dangerous." Fall, Spring or Summer 20??.
