From Paulie to Cyd

Does anyone remember why John Cygan (Paulie) left at the beginning of season two, replaced by Melinda McGraw (Cyd)? Just curious if he left for another gig, or because he wasn't happy in the role? Or did they deliberately replace him to bring on a strong female character?

He left to join the sitcom "Bob", I think.

I don't know why, but I do remember Paulie returning to the show in Season 4 and Cyd leaving. Unusual move in any show.
