Do you think that if Gary Olsen was still alive........

The show would have continued and the sitcom "My Family" would never have been made?

I loved this show as i was growing up, however regrettably as i hit my mid teens i kinda stopped watching the show around series 6 (not by chioce but you start going out with your mates and loose touch abit).

I have to say that i think the show had well run it's course by around series 5/6 as i think it kinda lost the plot?

What are your thoughts?

reply

as much as i love this show, it should have ended at season 6.
you stopped watching at just the right time.
specially too have missed 'he who should not be mentioned........never mind tied in a bag and thrown down the deapest well' the kid they took in at end of season 7.
gawd, that kid was awful!

My favourite episodes were when they went to Florida and the one when they had a power cut and all have to sit down in the living room and chat, lol. And not to forget the one where David and Ben end up doing the blues brothers at Jenny's school play (sorry i forget the titles.) What are your fav episodes?

A brilliant cast but sometimes i felt the writer just went a little over the top. It is a very nostalgic show for me though as i grew up watching it and very sad about Gary dying.

I think the reason i dont watch the show "my family" is because i know it is a cheap rip off of 2.4!

I am pretty confident that had Gary not died it certainly would still be made today even if only Xmas specials etc thats the sad thing as we know for sure that no more will EVER be made as Ben was a pivital character.

I am glad all the episodes were made, even the ninth series ones I liked the fact they were OTT its what made the series unique and stand out.

It did kind of go downhill after they took in the kid, yes :(

They were deffo going to make a new series as John Pickard said the scripts had been written and some minimal recordings had been made about two weeks before they got the news that Gary had unfortunately died. There was going to be at least 1 new series

reply

No, neither of the above is true. No scripts or recordings had been made. Had Gary recovered, the show may have continued, but that didn't happen.

reply

Actually yes it is- in Feb 2004 in the sky magazine John Pickard was promoting Mile High and he was asked about how he felt when Gary died and whether rumours were true about a ninth series being made before the news came out that Gary died and in his answers he said new series yes, minimal recordings and some scripts

reply

No, I didn't write any scripts.

^^^Are you the real Andrew Marshall? if so hi I think you're great.

Is a spin-off entirely impossible?

In my eyes the only episode that could ever be made would be one were its Bens funeral after dying in a freak accident while white water rafting on an immersion heater after winning an Adventure Holiday for one in.......Lets say Jamaica.

Jenny would have dumped Keith and married Clive, she would have 2 kids - twins, one boy, one girl.

David would be a self made businessman with his own chain of Pet Shops, specialising in insects and lizards.

Bill would become slighty lost without Ben but would have exciting nights out/ meals and adventures with Rona who would now have 4 kids with Tony.

Christine would turn up for Bens funeral only to ask Bill to the keys for the van - as though she was being hard hearted - then Bill would chase after her for making a scene only to find her crying in the van and it turns out she only wanted it as a reminder of Ben who she counted as her best friend.

Bette would be long gone - But could leave a video message for the event of each family members death (coz she wouldnt want to miss the funeral)

Declan would now be a social worker and too busy to attend.
