How does someone become a witch?

I haven't read the book in a while and the movie doesn't go into this, but I assume witches age like regular people. Therefore, how does the Grand High Witch recruit new witches? I assume witches are made, not born.

Maybe she scouts women who are young, but naturally do not like children and transforms them?

I have always wondered this.

I don't think the book goes into detail of how they become witches either.

The movie is interesting in that the blonde assistant who later becomes good says "I didn't want to be one of them anyway" I wish we could have gotten more backstory on how she become one/was made to become one.

I'm pretty sure the book mentions that witches are creatures (ie not human) who happen to look like females, but not exactly like normal women which is why they disguise themselves with wigs and gloves etc. to blend in and live in society, heightening how dangerous they are!

That's right. The grandmother says they're not human, they are completely different animals. Demons in human shape she calls them.

The book like the movie doesn't give any details where or how Witches came about. All the grandmother says is that where ever you find people you find witches.
