The books ending would not have worked spoilers

I'm amazed so many people say they prefer the ending to the book?

It would not have translated onto the big screen well to have had Luke be content to die in 8 years at the age of 16. In a surreal novel aimed at children that's fine but a mainstream family movie it would be too much of a downer.

Having said that I do think the films ending is a bit lame the way one of the Witches turns good for no reason other than that she wasn't invited to a party. I think it would have been better if Luke's Grandma had used Anjelica Huston's blood to reverse the spell. After all she is supposed to be a Peter Cushing, Giles type of expert on the occult so I can imagine that she would have been able to do that.
