What was with the score?

It I remember correctly, Chinatown had a very mysterious eromatic score, yet does The Two Jakes, the sequal, have a more humdrum melody?

The score for "Chinatown" was a masterpiece of minimalist tonalities that the late Jerry Goldsmith wrote in only a week. It really lended a marvelous atmosphere to the film.

The "Two Jakes" was written by Van Dyke Parks, who worked with Nicholson before when he wrote the score for "Goin South". The "Two Jakes" might be his best score... but it is very different to the type of score Goldsmith wrote for "Chinatown". It did have it's moments... but not truly memorable in my opinion.
