Question About the Ending-- MAJOR SPOILER!

At the very end, Jake Gittes plays a recording that "the other Jake" made for his wife, telling her that he loved her, etc.

When was this tape made? Jake Berman didn't plan his suicide in advance; it was more of a "Carpe Diem" thing. When did he get the wire tape? A wire tape wasn't an item that Gittes would have carried around in his pocket-- those things were big and very heavy.

Otherwise, a great movie. Wish they'd hurry up and make the final chapter!

there's a final chapter?

It's part of what's supposed to be a trilogy-- Chinatown, The Two Jakes, and …

All are about Jake Gittes; The Two Jakes is basically a continuation of Chinatown-- the character Kitty Berman (and, more importantly, her mother) was a central figure in Chinatown. If you've never caught Chinatown, you really should!

Wish they'd get the final chapter out.

I wish they'd made this sooner, and they could've got this and the third part out in the '80s.

This movie was one of the first in a long time to pioneer special of this magnitude.

To answer the question (which nobody seemed to do here), the tape could've been made at anytime. He wasn't referring to his suicide, but his impending death. That was what the two Jakes talked about, that was why Jake (Harvey Keitel) was seeing the other woman, she was his doctor, that's why Jake (Jack Nicholson) found the other Jake's x-rays...he was dying anyway. The tape wasn't about his suicide, he was going to die no matter what.

You haven't seen it yet, and you're reading the spoilers in the forum...okay, since you've gone that far, the answer is yes, she is Evelyn Mulwray's daughter. If I may ask, how'd you figure that out without seeing it?

could it be a bad boby double

You see, in the end, our truest opinions are not the ones we have never changed...

Jake saw Kathrine when she was about 15. He saw a lot of women after that, and as he said, all of them somehow reminded him of her. So he probably wasn't actually expecting to see her again. Besides, it seemed to me that Jake was somehow a bit slower in this movie. Don't know why, though.

I don't know should I go to a doctor or something, but it was definitely Kitty in the room where Mr. Bodine was shot. Or at least she looked a lot like her.

And I'm eagerly waiting to see the final chapter too. I hope they lighten up about what "really" had happened to Jake in Chinatown.
