Too many characters to keep track of

For anyone who has not seen Chinatown , this movie
would seem quite different.
But in this movie there were too many characters

I will have to see it again to try to figure out
who is who.

Also can anyone tell me what year is depicted
Gittes says this was 15 years ago . So this
would be Hollywood in about 1963?

I agree about the characters - I found it all a bit confusing too. Definitely needs a second viewing.

It's set about 10/11 years after Chinatown - circa 1948.

I agree there were too many characters who really aren't explained. One is the guy who rats out his boss Rawley's slant-drilling to Gittes (at the gay bar). I don't think it is explained why he does this? And it seems pointless to have the Lt. Loach character, whose only function is to tie back to Chinatown through his unseen (in 2 jakes) father and to justify a fight scene. They also keep showing Jake's assistants (Walshe and another guys) and Berman's lawyer, and they are all kind of old white guys in suits who blend into each other and who aren't important characters yet they show up constantly. And they throw in Jake's finance for about 10 seconds, which seems an unnecessary subplot about his engagement blowing up. Unfortunately, I didn't think this movie merited a second viewing (at least not for several years). As it was, I had to watch it over 2-3 nights because it moved so slow.
