The 'Keep Out' sign

Kind of a minor detail, but none the less: did anyone else notice that the busted up 'Keep Out' sign that Gittes finds in the scene where he visits the B and B development for the first time (about 35 minutes into the movie) looks fake? It's pretty obvious that the board was torn before it was written on, i e that this is not an old sign that has been worn with time.

I guess Nicholson as director decided that they couldn't afford the time to get this thing right, or maybe he didn't catch it (since he was busy acting in the scene as well). But still, it kind of annoys me. I guess if this movie had been shot today, they would simply have fixed it in post using CGI.
