What disease did he have which was too traumatic to tell his wife about, so traumatic that he ended up suiciding? I mean, if I had some diseasethat wsa causing my skin to go weird and which could end up killing me, I'd tell my wife straight away what the problem is. I just want to know what his problem was, and why he was too nervous to tell anyone about it.

Spoiler: I'm pretty sure it was cancer. It was incurable so the opportunity to take his own life was, erh, too good to pass by as it were. Gives new meaning to "one last cigarette".

Cancer, probably prostatic or testicular hence not wanting to take off his clothes in front of his wife, hence the rash (from the radium implant), hence the side effects he talked about (also from radium...the radiation therapy of the 30s and 40s).
And hence being unable to have children with his wife; their deepest desire.
