I have seen the movie 4 times and have not been able to find
where the ATM machine is that there was such a big todo over.
I heard the SAME thing - they must have fixed it... because I rented the movie from Netflix JUST to see it!!!

Haha... actually, it's not really like that at all. The "M" in ATM means machine, thus making it redundant to say "machine" after "ATM." However, "Mastercard" is a brand, therefore it's not wrong to say MasterCard Card, even if it does sound silly.
Or "tuna fish" - I guess they say that so you don't confuse it with "tuna beef" and "tuna bird" when you're ordering a sandwich.

I just watched the movie and never saw the ATM machine. I also just posted "Goof not a goof" about the backwards "FOR REDHEADS ONLY" sign. It appears backwards because we see it in the mirror in the beauty parlor. Not a goof! By the way, we say "tuna fish" so as to confuse it with "tuna piano".
shareI just went through the movie to see if I could find it, but no. I think the claim was simply made up by someone who wanted to have a joke at the expense of DVD viewers. Either that or the film makers fixed it for the DVD release.
It's worth mentioning that there aren't that many scenes in the movie where we can literally see Gittes walking outdoors. Of course he could be driving past one instead, but I looked at those scenes too and still couldn't find it.
I believe it located next to the Max Factor store Jake walks into at 1:10:20 or so. Very far left of the screen, obscured by a car. You can just see the top of ATM embedded in the wall.

Re the redundancies:
With ATM, PIN, VIN, etc. "machine" and "number" are the source of the last letter as an acronym, but via usage only in the "acronym" form, they function more like words that are not acronyms (and in fact, there are words in English that started as acronyms but that lost that status except as a historical etymological curiosity). Thus, "ATM" is no longer "Automated Teller Machine", but a word--ATM, pronounced like Ay-Tee-Em. "PIN" is just like "pin", etc.
For things like "The La Brea Tar Pits", "The Los Libros Bookstore", etc., because Spanish isn't English, in English the Spanish words or phrases usually function just like proper names would (and actually, they are proper names). This is just like the "Mastercard" case. Although they do not have to be proper names to function that way, as with cheese quesadilla.
So they're not really redundant, and saying that they are is more like being an Aspie who doesn't quite get how the language works.
