why was it not a hit at box office?

opening week it was 5th overall only ranking in a little under 5 million and it had no competition for new releases

Do you think if it had been released in spring/summertime it could have done better?

Universal head Sidney Sheinberg was not happy with the film and declined to give it that extra push and it opened limited. Sidney Sheinberg was a mean old Jew and was more busy with the sale of MCA and Universal to Japan in 1989/90.
It was on home video this became a huge hit.

The creators of the film have blamed it on its poor marketing and the January release as a common dumping ground for "bad movies".

reply

Because it's a hard movie for marketing.

It's a monster movie and comedy. How do you market that? "The movie has monsters that eat people, but it's funny!"

Tell that to a person that never saw the movie, it will confuse him to death.

reply

Most likely had little to no marketing and poor distribution.
