A question

A brief scan didn't show that anyone else had come up with this question. It's a long shot, but I wonder.

I am by no means sh!tpicking here...just saying what I would have attempted to do in this situation.

The concrete barrier that killed the first thing, grabboid, whatever...that looked like a channel...obviously the barrier killed one at full speed, and they can't penetrate it...couldn't they have followed that somewhere to safety or to alert authorities? Maybe it didn't lead all the way where they would wanted it to or something...just never heard them address it in the movie.

Interesting. I guess at the time they thought they had killed the only one. When Rhonda mentioned that there were 3 more, they just wanted to get to her truck.

Also maybe because Rhonda mentioned that "3 miles away here's another one", so they could have thought that there was plenty of time to haul azz.

But you are probably referring to later on when they are all stuck in Perfection. I think that the mountains could be closer to them than the channel. We'd have to pause at the moment when Val rips the map of the valley off the wall to be certain of that though. (or maybe you're right and it just leads to nowhere)

Listen! Do you smell something?

I would have at least tried to kill another one that way. That was the best kill save for the canyon at the end.

I just had another thought, maybe the channel doesn't go anywhere because they keep mentioning getting to Bixby (sp?).

But it would have been cool to scare one into the wall with a bomb.

You never know..."Stumpy" was pretty smart.

You just revealed why Graboid attacks only happen on ground, they wouldn't have much luck in a big city where everything is paved over.

In the shot right after Rhonda startles them, you can see that they're standing on dirt. It seems the bottom of it isn't paved... they just got lucky that that first graboid charged it head on.

The bottom of the channel is indeed paved. I have been there. This is one of the canals that takes water from Owens Valley to Los Angeles. LA owns the run off of all the water coming into the eastern Sierra, and Owens Valley. This canal joins others that join the main one running south to LA.
Getting back to the canal, in the story line, may have been further than the rocks (which are the approach to Mt Whitney).
the place where the road workers are killed is a short distance out of Lone Pine, still several miles from Perfection.
