What exactly was that thing in Burt's basement....

With the sand in it that they dumped some shell casings in and turned on that made all the noise?

It's been a while since I've seen the scene, but if I recall, it is a case cleaner/polisher. The sand is actually a buffing medium (dried corn cob is a popular choice). You put the brass and medium in the vessel, close the list and turn on the motor which vibrates it all together to give the brass a nice shine up.

Again if I recall correctly, most of the reloading equipment in the 'rec room' was Dillon gear.

Just seems weird that they'd have dumped in some empty brass, I figured they hadn't shot at anything yet, unless they did some idle target practice while they were out and about.

I doubt a day went by without Burt firing off a few rounds.

The Gummers' basement gun wall scene was my favourite of the whole movie. I liked the he kept grabbing bigger guns, while she kept pumping bullets into the thing. Nice husband and wife teamwork.
