who the heck is Melvin?

one of my favorite movies, just love it. But I could never understand why a teenager with no apparent guardian is just out living in the desert. None of the other characters seemed to care about him except that he was a prankster. who was he, why was he there, where did he live?

I am just watching it right now and yet again, I was asking myself that very question.

The script (and I think some deleted scenes) explains that he does indeed have parents, and that they are quite neglectful. In the case of the film, the parents are out gambling in Las Vegas.
