Siskel liked "The Russia House", Ebert didn't. Ebert admired the Connery/Pfeiffer scenes but thought that the Scheider/Mahoney/Fox/Walsh scenes went on way too long. But there were, in fact, even MORE of those kinds of scenes in the book... which may explain why I, personally, enjoyed the movie somewhat more. I agree with Siskel (RIP) on this one.
"What I don't understand is how we're going to stay alive this winter."
The thing is, how can we believe the relationship? It seems like the two of them, from completely different cultures, only spent a few days together at most and they're already totally in love? Preposterous.
share"Love at first sight" is a popular saying for good reason. Of course no one believes this means you have mature love for the person at first sight, but you're intensely attracted to the person in the sense of thorough adoration, which -- if cultivated -- can blossom into mature, committed love.
This is the way it happened with my wife & me.
As far as Barley and Katya only spending several days togethers before deciding to get married: (1) Barley was a seasoned man and knew what he liked, (2) he felt he had experienced her from every angle in a challenging situation and she the same; and (3) being in his mid/late-50s, time was running out for Barley as far as attracting a marriage-minded hot babe goes, so he readily takes the leap.
