Boring Crap

Dialogue without drama.

Michelle Pfeiffer whispering. Sean Connery glugging Scotch.

LeCarre novels are good but they don't make good movies.

Having seen this movie a dozen times, I cannot get enough of it. The plot, the characters, the locations, and mostly the realism of this era is what makes this a very inteligent movie for inteligent viewers.

Concerning your last (erudite) comment. How about the "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy" and "Smiley's People" novels that were made into BBC TV dramas? Take a look at the boards for these, and you will find hundreds of delighted viewers........

in my entire history of cinema going from 1965 till now, this is the ONLY film i have EVER walked out of............absolutely awful.......and so boring.

reply

i wouldnt call it crap but boring is a perfect description

and even worse i cant beleive the amazon review lauds the dialogue as being notable, some of the stuff Fox and especially Scheider had to say were embarracing. I felt sorry for Scheider having to say such junk

Whatsamatter, OP, et al, no explosions?
Have to have your characters in one dimension only?

How sad.

reply

You don't like this film because your brain is stupid.

Looked interesting to me, but when I started watching it I was getting lost re who everyone was and what they were trying to do, so I nodded off for about 45 minutes or so, that didn't help much, still didn't know what everyone was doing or why, but I'm thinking I may watch it again, try to stay awake, maybe it's a really good film. Certainly the spectacular scenery of Red Square and Russian street scenes made it watchable even though I didn't know what was going on. I'm for sure going to give it another chance, and Michelle is just so beautiful it's worth watching again just for that.

reply

Well its really a matter of taste, I'd much rather get lost in the intrigue behind this masterpiece than suffer through a typical idiotic film like fast and furious.

The big mystery is if the book manuscript really contains anything at all or just non-sense... I personally loved the film, and the book which I read afterwards.
