Announcement after the film

I remember watching The Rookie on ITV a few years back and after the end credits had rolled a announcer said "Clint Eastwood would like it known that this film is a reflection of his sense of humour" or something very similar to this. It was a rather comment you wouldn't expect to hear, especially from a TV accouncer person. Anyone else remember this?

reply

Yep, I remember that too. One of those "Huh?" moments.

reply

Yes, very "Huh?". Can't say I've heard it any other time. Now the question is why was the annoucement made? Such a random thing as this can't have happened without a reason.

My thinking is that because they broadcast it uncensored, which was quite amazing for ITV at that time, they must have got some complaints phoned in while the film was on (even though it was well after the 9pm watershed) so came up with this "gritty realism" announcement to shut the complainers up.

Just a thought........

I remember that announcement being made. It was actually in late 1993 on a Saturday night when The Rookie premiered on ITV and it was probably cut. The announcer said something at the end about the fact that despite it being the usual 'dark' and 'adult' Clint Eastwood film, it is not to be taken too seriously. Like you said, perhaps there were quite a few complaints.

Now imagine if Sudden Impact was shown at that time, UNCUT. THAT movie would have probably generated millions of complaints!

PS The Rookie was definitely cut back in '93. At the end, they didn't show the bit where Clint plugs Raul Julia in the head. On first viewing, I thought it was Charlie Sheen who killed him. Nice editing, ITV!
