Stallone seems to have changed his tune about the movie.

Back on May 21st, Stallone did a watch-along with the original "Rocky" over at Facebook Live. It was more or less like a live audio commentary for the movie. But at one point, he briefly mentioned "Rocky V" and said, "I think it's underrated."

That's the most positive thing he's said about the film since it was new.

There are only a few wonderful moments in this film but I think the downfall of this film is not managing to actually do more between Rocky and his son.

Also Rocky suddenly going into the shadows of financial dept, after the epic match with Drago is not best idea they came up with.

reply

Rocky V did a lot between rocky and his son, my only real complaint is Stallone’s acting, he was just too over the top. But it’s definitely a solid film and doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. It’s IV that’s a POS

reply

WTF?

Rocky IV is the best!

reply

Rocky IV is a trash movie. Easily the worst in the series (including the Creed films)

reply

No it wasnt. Lol. It was the silliest of all the films. Rocky 5 could have been great but they made it silly once Tommy Guns manger walked in. Rocky Balboa and the Creed films brought the series back to a semblance of realism.

reply

I've probably watched Rocky IV ten times as much as any of the other films. I love it. Yeah, it's silly, but silly in a great and awesome way.

I'd much rather go rewatch Rocky IV again than rewatch either of the Creed movies (especially Creed 2).

reply

Creed 2 was a more realistic follow up of the drago family. There is an awesome cut scene of victor and adonis sitting in the locker room talking after the fight. Rocky and ivan look at each other give a nod of approval.

Stallone wanted to do a fight scene between rocky and ivan at the hospital. They even have a rehearsal scene from it. Thank god they didnt do it. It looked completely stupid.

reply

I'm just not sure realism is something I want from the Rocky series. But I'll agree with you that Creed 2 was relatively realistic, at least in comparison with some of the earlier entries in the franchise.

I heard about that fight scene. I think Dolph was disappointed it didn't make it into the film. Or maybe it was Stallone. Maybe I saw Dolph saying Stallone was disappointed.

reply

Yeah Stallone was disappointed. He even put the scene on his instagram. I mentioned it would have not been a good scene to add and that the locker room scene would have been something to keep.

reply

VERY GOOD...THE ROCKY/SON STUFF WAS ALL UNDERCOOKED...I TOTALLY AGREE...THATS WHY THE FILM,WHILE GOOD,FEELS HOLLOW.🙂

reply

I always liked Rocky V and I'm among the few people who don't think it's the worst of the franchise by any means. Actually, "worst" is a bit harsh (they are all at least enjoyable it their own way)... let's say, the weakest instalment.

Rocky V is incredibly dramatic. I honestly think the street fight is what most viewers were taken aback by, like they were cheated out of a real Rocky fight because of it. Other than that, this movie has the most dramatic elements since Rocky II, especially with Adrian.

This movie actually has some tear jerking moments in it, if you give it a chance. The endearing flashback with Micky is gut-wrenching for me, and the ending montage with the overlapping melodramatic Elton John's Measure Of A Man, absolutely fantastic. That's actually the best montage of the entire series, as it goes through snapshots of all 5 movies up to that point. For me it's dramatic because it not only shows Rocky's long journey, it also reminds you that you've shared that journey with Rocky, with Stallone. It takes you back and makes you think about where you were in real life when you first saw those moments on the big screen, or home video...whatever you were doing at the time. It's like looking through a photo album.

I legitimately find the street fight in "Rocky V" far and away more exciting than the listless "real" boxing match from "Rocky IV."

Good to hear some kind words about the film.

reply

I never really understood the point in having the street fight.

He wasn't medically cleared to have a boxing match, where they have padded gloves on and doctors present. So as a compromise, they fight in street instead.

reply

They have the street fight because Tommy had the gall to punch Paulie. Rocky was having none of that.

Also, doubles as stealth genius from Rocky: he and Tommy have a fight... and George Washington Duke gets no money out of it.

reply

The street fight was different and it brought excitement, but not having Balboa involved with a real fight in the ring— I think that had a lot of Rocky aficionados feeling like something was missing...and with all due respect to the late Tommy Morrison, he was the least talented in terms of acting ability among all of Rocky’s opponents...not that we expect Brando or Day-Lewis in the Rocky saga, but it was a bad kind of funny with some of the lines delivered by Tommy “The Machine” Gunn....

In retrospect, those weren’t bad scenes, using real-life sports reporters and the underrated performance of Richard Gant as Don King-clone George Washington Duke really added to the tension of those scenes...but it couldn’t hide the flaws of Morrison...that was some Brett Favre in There's Something About Mary-type shyt right there (okay, maybe not that bad, but you catch the drift)...

Apollo Creed was a great foe done well by Carl Weathers; Mr T as Clubber Lang was the most fun, rude and crazily inappropriate of all the opponents (and my personal fave); Dolph Lundgren both literally and figuratively “killed” it as Drago despite not having many lines...hell, even Mason “The Line” Dixon, played by former light heavyweight champ and Roy Jones-conquerer Antonio “The Magic Man” Tarver, did a pretty damn good job in 6...Tommy “The Duke” Morrison as Tommy Gunn? Let’s just say he made his self-alleged distant relative John Wayne look like Olivier....

Still, good times!

Stallone trashed this movie for years (personally, it's my favourite, just after ROCKY III)
I reckon the movie hits a lot harder nowadays, starring his late son (Sage)....which probably explains his (understandable) newfound love for the movie?

reply

Rocky V has one of my favorite scenes in the entire saga.

Mickey's flashback and the line: "Get up you sonofabitch, cause Mickey loves ya!"

I can watch any Rocky movie, but would only rate as *good* films Rocky and Rocky Balboa.

reply

Good! I think it is very underrated, and honestly a much more well made movie than 3 or 4 (which I also love though. I love all of the Rocky films). 3 and 4 are basically hour and a half long music videos with 80’s superhero fights mixed in.

Rocky V is definitely not perfect and has its flaws, but I’ve always thought the hatred for Rocky V was ridiculous, and it became one of those things it became a trend to bash on, even for casual fans who don’t know shit about the Rocky films...all you had to do was say “Yeah, I love the Rocky movies, but 5 sucked.” It’s a load of crap.

I still get so fired up during the street fight I want to run through a wall! Lol. Everything Rocky says is so awesome! “Yo, you knocked him down...why don’t you try knocking me down now.” “My ring’s outside.”

Tommy: “I want my respect!”
Rocky: “Well, come and get it.” (Proceeds to beat the shit out of Tommy)

Damn, how can you not love that!! Haha.

reply

I hated it when it seemed like it was the conclusion of the series. Once we got Rocky Balboa, it was easier for me to enjoy Rocky V for what it is: a crazy 90s promotion for turtleneck sweaters!
