Baphomet

What was going on with him? Don't recall it ever being explained, his body was all deteriorated, was that sections of him that were carried away towards the end by kinski n co.

Baphomet is a god made of stone. Something caused him great harm at some point in the past, before his gathering of the Nightbreed. His body was broken, most likely by an adversary that exists in his own realm as a deity, or perhaps many other deities who viewed him as an enemy for some unknown reason. These are things that Baphomet remains silent about. He obviously has some sort of plan via Cabal to be healed and saved from his enemies. In the novel, Baphomet is broken pieces suspended in a cold blue flame, but no more is given on his background.

It is explained in the director's cut that Baphomet can be dismantled and moved, which is what you are seeing in the later part of the film. This element was cut from the theatrical release, so you were left with glimpses of what looked like Baphomet being disassembled when Ashberry visits him, then showing him complete again when Boone visits him, them having him disappear in a blue light, then showing a couple of shots of Breed carrying large covered pieces into hiding. The theatrical version was a bit of a muddled mess at times due to dropping so much footage and rearranging it.

Whose idea was it for the word LISP to have an S in it?

Thanks for that, it certainly helped lots,it always annoyed me that virtually no background was given on such a great character, shame he didnt get more screen time to detail some of this.

I kind of like that Baphomet's origins are a mystery, as it fuels our imagination. In The Nightbreed Chronicles, a book released back in the day with small bios written by Barker for each character, Barker says that Baphomet was some fallen Pretender to a celestial throne and hints that he is possibly gathering the Breed in secret as a future army to storm the citadel he was exiled from. It's not a lot, but it does come from Barker and gives a possible hint of what may have come had Nightbreed ever gotten sequels or if he had ever written his Cabal sequels. Baphomet is really cool, but I think a part of his allure is that we don't know a lot about him. It's a lot of fun to sit back and speculate or give it thought. 

Isn't Baphomet supposed to be based on the Osiris myth?

reply

I'v never heard Clive reference the Osiris myth in any interview, but who knows? There are certainly similarities when you consider it.

God I hope he pens the sequels :) it is begging for them, always thought so, now more than ever, saw the directors cut and I loved it, only scene I didnt like was the singing one, would have preferred to see decker and the mask, it needed more of a voice over though, like the "quite a dance huh" distorted type voice, still excellent thou.

reply

Yes, I always thought the "quite a dance, huh" line was meant to be the sound of the mask alter-ego. I am sure that the voice would have been altered to sound like that to differentiate from Decker himself. But hey, it's unfinished deleted footage, so at least we got to finally see some of it!

I so want Barker to write the sequel novels. He spoke so adamantly about what was in store in his followup stories for the Nightbreed, yet after his experience making the movie, he seemed to lose interest in telling their story further. Who knows, though, what Clive will spring on us in years to come. I will always sit in hope of Cabal 2 and 3.

Yes definitely seems like the mask saying that line, I was really glad to see the scene after hearing people talking about it, I had visions of something like that green goblin scene in spiderman, one of the best scenes in the movie, would b a dream come true for barker to expand on the original and take us back to midian :) would love to see sheffer back in the cabal role to!

Their have been articles saying that Barker is working to get Nightbreed turned into a TV Series. I forget who but apparently some writer has already written a few episodes. if you google it I'm sure you will find something. They were saying that this would be a good way to get Nightbreed known to wider audience specially since supernatural shows are big now like anything with vampires etc. Their was talk of introducing new breed as well if I'm not mistaken either that or they were looking forward to makeup effects to get the same look as the movie.

Thought I would make it easier and just post the link:

This would be a good way to continue the story arc but, i must admit the cast would have to be really good for me to forget the original cast from the movie unless they bring the original main cast back that would be great.
