For *beep* sake...
I just stumbled across this on Netflix and I have to say that I absolutely loved it. I'm a 90's kid, but there were certain films and shows that slipped through the cracks for me, like anybody, there was bound to be stuff I missed. Good lord am I upset that I missed this in theaters.
Not only is the film beautiful with its practical effects, make up and matte painting shots, but it has an amazing score from none other than Danny Elfman. Also, out of nowhere one of my favorite directors shows up as a mask wearing, surgical instrument wielding psychopath?! I mean, my jaw hit the floor when Cronenberg showed up in the film, lol.
It's hard to categorize just exactly what this is as well. I mean, it's not really a horror movie per se. At times I felt like I was watching an 80's fantasy film that dropped acid, watched Hellraiser, Legend, and The Never Ending story on a cocaine binge, and then capped off the night by watching The Princess Bride. I mean, it really does feel like a twisted love story of sorts.
I'm simultaneously bummed out as well though, cause I can tell that it was left open for a sequel. I really wanna read the book now, but I hear Clive Barker abandoned the sequels to that as well. :(
Either way, after watching this on Netflix, I'm snatching up the new Blu-ray with a quickness.
