not sure if its been asked but..

why didn't they all just run to the nearest town rather than camp in the house. I mean the zombies move so so so slowly they wouldn't be hard to avoid on the run back to town?

reply

That's what Barbara suggested at least twice, but Ben was sure they'd be better off in the farmhouse. He'd just come from Evans City (IIRC that was the name of it) and it was a disaster area according to him. He should've listened to her.

Yes, run to the nearest town thats exactly 5 miles with no car, no food, an injured daughter who was bitten by a zombie, and more and more and more and more zombies who just continue to come. Slow zombies may not scare you but they'll crowd you and you'll eventually die. They go in big packs. The nearest city was Evan's city I believe of where Ben was which was a diasister according to him. If that's true than whats the point of going there? That would have been 3x as bad and just asking to be killed.

reply

Well things didn't pan out all that well when they decided to stay put so... Like Barbara said, they could've left Cooper and his wife and daughter behind (of course we the audience know the daughter was a goner anyway) and gone for help. They might've run into that group of rednecks sooner. Then again, it might not have been good for Ben, but it would've been worth a try imo.

And hindsight is 20/20.

Tough call, though. The metal shed near the gas pumps might have been better. The pump was just padlocked, which the kid should have known... a crowbar (which they had) would have sufficed to open it.

The attic seemed like a good place... I'd have stayed upstairs... not sure how to block the stairs, maybe lay a door over it, I don't think the zombies would have the upper body strength to climb up if there was an opening left. I'd even hand out on the roof, maybe.

Of course, we've all had the knowledge from all the wonderful movies about what to do in case of the zombie apocalypse, so it's not a fair comparison.

if they did that there wouldn't be this movie right...

My feet smells like *beep* Its because I stepped on dog poop.

The thing with Romero's films is that it's never really the zombies that do the humans in, it's the people themselves. I think they would have been fine in the farmhouse if they could have cooperated. Once Barbara is on her own, she does fine.

No kidding. Yes, the zombies moved slow, but imagine if you ran constantly, you'd get so tired out and move as slowly as the zombies, perhaps even slower. Not to mention if you did run, they'd follow you one after another and you'd be leading an entire leagion of the undead wherever you went.

As for staying in the house, well, there are ups and downs to that kind of situation. There's the claustrophobia thing to take into consideration combined with the fear of not knowing what's going on. On the other hand, you've got walls separating you from the zombies as well as places to ambush them until you thin out the numbers enough that you can make a run for it. There were plenty of blunt objects in the house so it's not like the gun was the only weapon.

Why is it no one ever seems to get it through their heads that blades and clubs don't need reloading?

reply

Hide in a tall tree? or a tree house? im sure the zombies were incapable of climbing

Great, then you get treed by zombies, like a racoon getting chased by dogs! (well, if they know you're there; if they don't, they may walk right past you all night, moaning and ruining your sleep!)

Part of the problem is that the people in the movie aren't sure whats going on. Sure, Uncle Reg reanimated and they think they know the dead are coming back to life, but they aren't sure what's going on in the world around them. The coopers were attacked by a mob, the kids saw their uncle go cannaible on their cousin, Ben saw Evans city(Romero must hate that town, it gets hit in several of his movies) turn into a war zone, and Barb was chased cross country by funeral zombies.
But thats all they know.
They don't know where help is. They don't know why it's happening, and they don't know what capabilities the reanimates have. Think of things like Left for Dead, with it's various 'species' of zombies: What if that was happening: they get out in a field, and run into tank or super fast zombies!

It would be an interesting project to do, though. Show what would have happened if the people would have run for their lives instead of hiding in the house!

"Yes, it's the Apocalypse alright. I always thought I'd have a hand in it."

Haha i guess, i have a feeling that i would have tried to get to the nearest shore and find a boat and just stay on it for as long as possible.

reply

traveling with a sick girl would of slowed them down. staying in the home offered some protection (if they would have worked together to seal it up), and no real sure way of knowing if their is any help anywhere. so i would of stayed put.

Everyone was in shock...especially Barb (Patricha Thalman). In the first third of the movie when she started to get her bearings back she suggested that they (zombies) move slowly...I believe she repeated it a second time. Ben (Tony Todd) had been through a more harrowing thing in another city as said above...probably with more Zombies/deaths and eventually agreed. (Total shock in a condensed place)

Roger Ebert's review brought up this point. He saw the original Romero film and got hooked. Another 100% mind made up before the remake.

Great film.

I watched the movie once again today.

It's odd looking at it now - the things done wrong. The actions recommend in Max Brook's "The Zombie Survival Guide". Boarding up the windows was a good idea. Moving all the food upstairs and filling the bath tub with water would've been a better idea. As Walternate mentions, the stairs... don't block it - chop it up. I'm sure the basement had an axe or two. The ghouls couldn't reach them. They could've waited it out on the second floor. Have a sign out the window 'We're Still Alive!' or something like that.

The other thing that caught my attention was Johnny; Barbara doomed him. She kept stabbing that zombie with the funeral cross, the spikes that held it onto ground pierced the undead fellow several times. She then accidentally stabs Johnny in the hand - infecting him.

Going back to the topic. Barbara was not going to Evans City. She was trying to get out and find help. Barbara wasn't following the road. In fact it was dumb luck she was found by those rednecks. She was kind of walking aimlessly in the woods.

If the folks in the movie are rednecks , meaning everyone excluding Barbara and Ben then a third of the country must be "rednecks". How in the hell did we become the super power of the world in 200 plus years?

In jest...I'm southern ...... As for the "Zombie Survival Guide" Noone had a copy, they were frightened and in panic....Even Ben who seemed to have it mostly together was flipped out. He was the most rational out of the irrational.

Plus, by the movie's timeframe, the Handbook wasn't published yet. =)

Just my one cent since I can't afford two.

reply

Why didn't they just boot the black guy out the door, and while the zombies were eating him, the rest could have run to safety........Oh, like I'm the only one who thought of that.

"My girlfriend sucked 37 d*cks!"
"In a row?"

reply

Except one person being eaten wouldn't distract the whole flock as noticed multiple times not only in this movie, but zombie movies in general. Plus, if you were really watching the movie, they wouldn't have had to sacrifice anyone as they could WALK RIGHT PAST ANY OF THEM LIKE THE GIRL EVENTUALLY DID.

As of 9/2011 zombie movies and tv shows are obsessed. As of the date posted zombie's are even in tv commercials, much less mentioned or glorified on kids shows. I love the classic Romero films but dont get this current zombie infatuation. Totally lame.
