After all the hammering, yelling, fighting off zombies, dying, etc, that happened, Copper walks away after taking a bullet from Ben, and goes up into an attic.
An attic they could have all gotten into in the first place.
I always wondered this too! Why they did not just go into the attic! It is the perfect place! Pull that string up like Harry does and tadaaah! YOU'RE SAFE! It's one of those thing that if this had happened it wouldn't have been a very exciting movie to watch them in the attic playing cards while the help comes. haa haa
But Ben's position was that he didn't want to get cooped up in a room with no exits. Although, you still had exits from the attic (maybe), and until the zombies start to use ladders you don't have to worry about them getting up there; just sit a lookout on the roof away from the edge and look for the calvery! But it would have been a boring movie.
"Yes, it's the Apocalypse alright. I always thought I'd have a hand in it."
The attic was the safest place - safer than the cellar. And most tend to have windows. But like someone said, it'd make a boring movie to just listen to them argue in the attic the entire time. They shouldn't have even introduced it.
But Cooper just happened to notice it. Tommy ahd his girlfriend were probably the only ones aware of it from the beginning, but probably didn't consider or simply forgot about it.
Problems with going to the attic: There were about 7 people in the house, including the sick kid, would that many people fit in the attic, and if so, how comfortably? Does the attic have a bathroom, or toilet? Are we sure there's a window for ventilation, escape, sticking your head out to shout for help? If the National Guard sees the house surrounded/overrun with zombies, might they just fire artillary at it to kill the zombies, without checking it first for survivors (may seem farfetched, but I read that during WWII in France an American soldier was shooting at a building because he thought there were snipers there, until someone told him there were civilians in the building)? If I was stuck in the farmhouse with no reasonable chance of escape, I'd keep the attic as a last resort, and try to store some food/supplies up there right away, rather than waiting to the last minute, but it would be the last resort. Another thing to consider, even though the people didn't know it would happen, is that the kid was going to die and turn into a zombie. The attic doesn't sound like much fun, now, does it?
Yea that would be the last option. They didn't even know how long they were going to stay there, it would be a matter of time before Cooper would get everyone killed.
The attic did have at least one window, you can see it on multiple exterior shots of the house. But even if it did not have a window, that would not stop me, id 'build' one.
My strategy would of been to board up the house really good and put supplies in the attic. Then id live in the house and move to the attic if there was any break-ins. Simple, easy, comfortable and safe.

I agree with the majority here. It wouldn't have mattered. It would have made no difference. Same as the cellar, no exit. True, the attic would protect them for a while, from the zombies, but they'd still have to come down eventually. And if rescue showed up, they'd never know they were there, and the rescue wouldn't know if the survivors were there, and destroy the house, killing them. So, the best place to be was on the ground/main floor. They may have been the most exposed there, but it was also both the only way they'd know if help came, and the only way they'd know when they could escape. They had to defend against the zombies outside by shooting at them, and/or nailing boards over the windows, those who were able to.
I agree. I would not immediately think to look for the attic either. and Ben and Cooper were set in their ways. Each though their idea was the best. But now, thanks to this movie, if I am in this situation, I'm taking the food and all the water I can and and going up.
I'm sure the characters did not know about the attic. But they should have climbed on the roof. Zombies could not get up and a rescue party coming by could see them.
If anyone was intelligent, all they needed to do was nail doors over the stairs in the house so zombies would only be able to crawl up. Putting another door across the top would prevent them from ever getting to the top and crawling over. And if they wanted, they could have put nails through the doors so the zombies attempting to climb up would get impaled on the doors.
And how hard would it have been to remove the porch staircase to prevent zombies from getting close to the windows?
Another thing to consider is that the characters in the basement had been avoiding the upstairs prior to the arrival of Ben and Barbara because of the fatal altercation between Uncle Reej and Satchel.
