This Film DESERVES Credit for being the 'FIRST' Zombie film to do this!
I saw this Film when it was released in theaters way back in '89, I remember because I went in a big group date and I was in 8th grade at the time...THIS was the first zombie movie to add white'ish/blue milky contacts to zombies eyes giving them that glazed over/empty look that proved so effective it's been copied ever since. I remember reading an article in CINEFANTASTIQUE or some such Genre rag back then that Savini and his EFX Crew poured over a crapload of autopsy photos to get the look of the zombies just right, and how the glazed over eyes gave them all the creeps.
It's quite true too when you look at zombie films from the 80's, how even with all that bad yellow makeup and orange blood, their eyes ruin the effect...normal human eyes just aren't as scary as the vacant look contacts provide. In all truth I much prefer this version of NOTLD than the B/W Original...I can barely sit through 30 mins of it. This version was much more well acted than the first.
Wake up, Time to DIE.
